One of the first things that newly engaged or just married couples want to do is begin to put down roots. That often starts with the thoughts of purchasing their first home. Just like any big purchase, and let’s face it – this is the biggest, the process starts with examining your household budget. Your family will change a lot from engagement to retirement, so it’s important not to bite off more than you chew right out of the gate. Many economists recommend keeping your monthly mortgage at or below 25% of your income. Too often, young marrieds will stretch themselves too far on their first mortgage, becoming what we call “house poor”.

Once you determine the budget you feel comfortable with, a knowledgeable Realtor, preferably one that has a great reputation with first time home buyers, is your greatest advocate. Finding an agent that you connect with will make what can be a stressful process easier on you both. Look for an agent that has the heart of a teacher, doesn’t put any pressure on you, and is patient as you learn the ropes. This person will be your partner through the process!
